Formal Preschool Science Activities and Experiments

Preschool science activities and experiments that you and your children can easily do at home in the kitchen.

science experiments

By "formal" I mean that these preschool science activities and experiments require a little more than just talking about aspects of everyday life.

Science is always one of my children’s favourite topics of study and I owe that to the wonderful science curriculum that I use from Sonlight . They absolutely loved the hands-on aspect of learning by doing.

When my little ones were aged, 6 and 4 (they turned 7 and 5) we used the Sonlight K preschool science programme. Even if you don’t like so-called ‘canned’ curriculums, this one is worth buying, even if you only buy the science programme for home or a preschool.

The reason is this – if you buy their Re-usable Science Kit, plus the K Science (preschool science) kit and the accompanying Discover and Do DVD and you will have everything you need to turn your kitchen into a preschool science lab.

In the kits Sonlight will supply you with all the odd bits and pieces that you need in order to perform the preschool science activities and experiments illustrated in the Science Activities book and save you running to the store before you can do each one.

The optional InquisiKids Discover and Do DVD is a demo video which I highly recommend. On the Sonlight site you can see some sample clips from the DVD. In ordinary kitchen, you will see a young student performing and explaining all the preschool science activities and experiments that your children are required to do.

I found that my children really enjoyed being able to see what they were supposed to do and the results they were supposed to achieve before tackling the tasks themselves…and all our experiments worked! Some of them we chose not to do ourselves, but we still got to see them work!

Science Activities Volume 2 is divided into three parts with practical preschool science activities throughout:

  • Science with Air – air pressure, expansion, wind, air power, flight, breathing, sound, other tricks and more.
  • Science in the Kitchen – absorption, evaporation, taste, fizz, freezing and melting, eggs and more.
  • Science with Plants – germination, light and water, flowers, trees, seeds, soil.

There are three volumes in this series. Science Activities Volume 1 is part of the Sonlight 1 curriculum

The Sonlight Science programmes also include a few other preschool science books, which are not necessarily so hands-on but are great for reading aloud with your children, so they are a winning combination!
