A great series of books for preschoolers from NZ is Lynley Dodd's Hairy Maclary stories. They are fun and use rhyming for memory.

Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author. Hairy Maclary is a mischievous mongrel, who along with his canine friends, Hercules Morse and Blitzer Maloney, and his feline enemies, Scarfax Claw and Slinky Malinki is the hero of these popular, entertaining children's books.
