Books about the Four Seasons

You could use the following books to complement your four seasons theme:

The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton

The story is about urbanisation and how a house in the countryside becomes surrounded by development and technology before finally being 'rescued', but the theme of the changing seasons and the apple trees can't be missed.

After reading this story, talk to your children about how trees change from season to season. Ask questions about their knowledge of trees at different times of the year.

The Tiny Seed (World of Eric Carle)Children's Nature Books)

Discover how seeds are dispersed and must survive all the hazards of the environment - snow, water, desert, birds and humans - as well as the seasons to survive and grow into a new adult plant and then start the cycle again. Eric Carle's books are always creatively illustrated. This is one of our newest favorites!

A New Coat for Anna by Harriet Ziefert

Set in hard times, post-World War 2, this story is about a mother who sets about bartering her precious possessions for wool and services needed to get wool from a farmer spun and tailored into a new coat for her daughter. Its a heart-warming story that progresses through the four seasons of the year.

The Year at Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen

This charming and humorous book takes readers month by month through the year at Maple Hill Farm, showing them the changes of the seasons and their effects on farmlife.

Poems about the Seasons

Bed in Summer

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Sing a Song of Seasons

Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall!

~Robert Louis Stevenson

The Months

January brings the snow,
makes our feet and fingers glow.

February brings the rain,
Thaws the frozen lake again.

March brings breezes loud and shrill,
stirs the dancing daffodil.

April brings the primrose sweet,
Scatters daises at our feet.

May brings flocks of pretty lambs,
Skipping by their fleecy damns.

June brings tulips, lilies, roses,
Fills the children's hand with posies.

Hot july brings cooling showers,
Apricots and gillyflowers.

August brings the sheaves of corn,
Then the harvest home is borne.

Warm september brings the fruit,
Sportsmen then begin to shoot.

Fresh October brings the pheasents,
Then to gather nuts is pleasent.

Dull November brings the blast,
Then the leaves are whirling fast.

Chill December brings the sleet,
Blazing fire, and Christmas treat.

~Sara Coleridge
