Easter Background

Explain to your children why we celebrate Easter:

Easter crosses crucifixion silhouette
At Easter Christians remember that our Saviour Jesus was crucified on a wooden cross. We believe that He is the Lamb of the world that died so that our sins would be forgiven and that through faith in Jesus, we will receive by grace, eternal life with God in heaven. (Give Scripture verses that apply – John 3:16, 1 John 10:10 and any others.)

Jesus was crucified on a Friday, now called Good Friday and He rose from death three days later.

Easter falls at the same time as the Jewish Passover…and this is significant too. The name Passover comes from when the Angel of Death passed over the homes of the Jews in Egypt in the time of Moses. Since they had been forewarned, the Hebrews had put lambs' blood on the doors of their homes, so that death would spare their first born child.

Just as the angel of death passed over the homes of the Jews in Egypt, that were marked with the blood of the sacrificial lamb, so too we are delivered by the blood that Jesus shed for our sins on the cross.

Since the true significance of Easter has nothing to do with chocolate eggs and bunnies, there is nothing about them on this page of easter crafts for kids.

I hope that you will start some new Easter traditions that remind your children of the act of salvation of Jesus on the cross by doing these activities and easter crafts for kids.

1. Bible Study - The First Passover

Easter Bible Read the story of the plagues in Egypt and how Moses led the Egyptians out of Egypt and across the Red Sea to safety in the Bible.

The story of the ten plagues can be found in the Bible in Exodus chapter 7 onwards. Exodus 12 tells of the last plague, the first Passover and the exodus from Egypt.

If you do not have a Bible handy, you can read these passages online at Bible Gateway.com

There are a two printable coloring pages related to this story among the Easter coloring pages.

3. Food - Matzoh

Matzoh is the traditional unleavened bread that is eaten during Passover. It is made of flour and water. It is a tradition which dates back to when the Hebrew slaves were finally free to leave Egypt. The Hebrew women did not have time to let their bread dough rise and so it turned out flat.

You can buy commercially made matzoh at your supermarket or make your own unleavened bread using the recipe which follows.

4. Easter recipe - Unleavened Bread

Ingredients

5 cups flour
1 2/3 sticks butter
1 pint whipping cream

Method

Mix together flour, butter and cream. Knead until mixed. Press onto cookie sheet and bake at 450 degrees F (or 230 degrees C)for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.

Unleaven bread originated as a result of God taking the children of Israel out of Egypt. They were in such a hurry to leave that they did not take the time to let their bread rise, thus the term 'unleaven' (or not lightened) bread. When the order was given to leave they quickly packed their unbaked, unrised bread dough into their back packs and started across the desert. The desert heat baked the bread into flat matzah. Actually any kosher bread recipe can be used as long as you DO NOT ALLOW it to rise. You can buy unleaven bread in many stores today, it is called matzah, matso, matzos or (pl) matzoth.

tomb cookies - easter recipe printable instructions. You will need to download Adobe Reader if it is not already installed.

Ingredients

Bible
1 cup whole pecans
1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch of salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1 qt. or gal. size zipper bag
wooden spoon
tape

Method

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (or 150 degree C).

2. Place pecans in ziploc bag and let the kids beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers.

Read: John 19:1-3. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.

3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Add the teaspoon of vinegar into the mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink.

Read John 19:28-30. Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

4. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life....

7. Easter Poem - Jelly Beans

You will need to buy a small packet of jelly beans or other candy that contains sweets of each color mentioned below. In South Africa I buy a type of liquorice beans made by Mister Sweet.

Red is for the blood He gave.
Green is for the grass He made.
Yellow is for the sunflowers so bright.
Black is for the dark of night.
White is for the grace He gave.
Orange is for the sun He made.
Purple is for the hours of sorrow.
Pink is for our new tomorrow.
A bag full of jelly beans,
colourful and sweet.
It's a prayer, a promise,
and a child's treat.

9. Easter Song

He Made the Stars to Shine

He made the stars to shine
He made the rolling sea
He made the mountains high
And He made me.
And this is why I love him:
For me He bled and died
The Lord of all creation
Became the crucified.

11. Easter Picture - Golgotha Silhouette

You will need

Drawing paper
Black wax crayon
Paint brush
Water color paints or diluted food coloring (red and/or blue

Method

Create a silhouette of three crosses on a hill (like the one further up this page). Draw the outlines for your children if they can’t do it alone. Let them colour in the mound of the hill and the three crosses with a black wax crayon. Wash over it with water colour paints or diluted food colouring to make a sunset (shades of red) or dark blue/purple sky – remember it became dark in the afternoon when Jesus died. Mix the red and blue to create purple. Add glitter and stars to the sky if you like – use start stickers or draw star with white wax crayon before you wash over the picture.
