1. Hello from Shirley

Hi

We're almost settled in our new house, just a few more boxes to go but there is still a lot of scrubbing to do!

For a few days my pc was disconnected and instead of working here in the evenings I rediscovered an old hobby that I love - reading. Since I started my site it has been neglected, but having just joined a monthly ladies' Christian book club, I had some good books alluring me!

...and since I really believe in all the many benefits of reading with children and getting them 'hooked on books', I am planning to add Book Reviews to this ezine!

If you are not receiving this email in html format or you find white gaps where there should be images, then use this link for a much more colorful and easier-to-read version!

2. Updates at Shirley's Preschool Activities

I am constantly amazed at how my site is progressing. Even though I have NOT been working at it, I returned to it after a few days offline and found that my traffic (the number of visitors) is still climbing steadily and some of my pages are ranked #1 in the Yahoo and MSN search engines.

For a website, it is important to have highly ranked pages like that, so that people will find your site, because a site without traffic is like a tree lost in a forest, no good to anyone except the birds!

I owe my success to Site Build It!

Without the excellent Action Guide that has taught me everything I need to know about building a SUCCESSFUL site, this site would have been like many others - lost in the cyberforest!

I am still working on ABC Fun & 1-2-3 so that it will available in e-book format.

I got my eldest daughter to help me plot the data on a bar graph today.

3. WAHM It! some more

Do you know someone who is

...struggling to balance her career and family?

... at home with the kids, but really needs an outlet for her talents and maybe some extra income too?

...or someone who'd just love to be in a different field, doing what she loves most?

If you do, tell her about WAHM It! The Masters Course for work-at-home-moms Download it or send her the link and in about 20 minutes you will both have your minds spinnning with inspiration and ideas for new opportunities.

This is what makes my site so successful!

In this ebook, four Work-At-Home Moms (WAHMs), the course's authors, will introduce you to a work solution that "fits" naturally with your family needs and yet is rewarding, exciting and soul-satisfying for you.

Just like they are doing, you too can create an information-rich web site that is based on something you know and love. No technical knowledge or prior experience is necessary. You too can build a real, long-term business on the Net.

Learn from the experiences and advice of Elizabeth, Cate, Jennifer and Erin (and several other successful WAHMs) in WAHM-IT!, The Masters Course. They are busy moms just like you and they know what it's like.

So they have taken the time to tell you everything, from reviewing all your options and organizing properly. And they progress all the way to the final desired outcome, including the nitty-gritty of how to actually build a substantial income online, illustrating with well-explained case studies.

An online business is affordable, flexible, and convenient. You can work at your web site and business when you like, at the speed that suits you, and still put the all-important needs of your family first. In other words, you can take your family to work with you!

Take the WAHM It! Masters Course today!

4. Tips

No more odd socks

This idea comes from my dad. One time when we visited he showed me how he avoids having odd socks return from my mom's laundry basket.

Before they get laundered he pins the pairs together with stainless steel safety pins!

6. Readiness Activities

This week I have created a pdf document that you can print. To download it you will need to have Adobe Reader installed. Some people don't like that option, so the activities are listed below as well.

Download Adobe Reader - opens in new window.

The Whole Child - Week 16 Activities - printable pdf

Week 16

Fine Motor Skills

Give your child a long piece of ribbon or even a skipping rope. Ask her to hold it by one end and twist her hand in circles to make spirals with the ribbon. Then ask her to shake it back and forth so that it ‘slithers’ like a snake. Let her flick the ribbon into the air and catch the ‘tail’ of the snake with her other hand. This may take some practice. Encourage her to create other patterns with the ribbon or rope.

Auditory Perception

Teach your child some action rhymes and encourage her to do the actions too.

Language and Thinking Skills

Find a text-free storybook at the library or alternatively use a story book that your child does not know. Look at the pictures together and ask your child to tell you the story. Choose a book that lends itself to this kind of activity. Some titles:

Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann (text free)
A Boy, A Dog and A Frog, Mercer Mayer (text free)
Harry the Dirty Dog, Gene Zion (text)

You can preview them at these online bookstores:

Visual Skills

Using coloured beads, construction blocks or coloured pegs on a pegboard or any other similar toys, ask your child to arrange repetitive patterns. Begin with simple combinations and let her enjoy success!

Mathematical skills

Demonstrate the concept of subtraction to your child. Begin with five items. Ask your child to tell you how many remain if you remove one. Now remove another item and repeat until none are left.

Use counting rhymes like Ten Green Bottles or Five Little Speckled Frogs (lyrics are on my site) to reinforce this activity in a fun auditory fashion!

Faith Building

If you have made a prayer tree as suggested last week, write the references of the Bible memory verses that your children learn on the grass. Tell your children that like fertilizer on a lawn, God’s word strengthens our faith. It also is the root and foundation of our faith.
